Since 1921, when the word 'robot' first appeared, robots have always been an icon that represent the advancement in technology. In particular after the year 1980, when the robot industry begans its rapid growth, everyone believes that robots are able to perform anythings and everythings. They were instruments to increase productivity and fuelled the economy drives. However, many of the installations have restricted to industry application. And through practical robots implementation, experiences accumulated, we also learned that robots cannot perform optimally if they are to build as general puprose machines.
The continual development and refinement of the robot industry achieves significant progress, as such according to the World Robotics 2005 Report published by United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and International Federation of Robotics (IFR), a robust growth in robot installations world-wide between 2005 and 2008 can be expected.
For industrial robots, "Although demand for robots within the automotive industry in Europe, North America and Japan may decrease, there is still growing demand in all developing markets in the world. Installations in general industry - especially the packaging industry, the food industry, the rubber and plastics industry and the machinery industry, will grow all over the world as a result of technical developments."
The good news is that the use of robots has spreading out beyond the industrial application. A forecast from the UNECE/IFR estimates that "About 7 million units of service robots for personal use will be sold for the period 2005-2008". In addtion to this, the projection for profession use service robots reach 50,000 for the period 2005 ~ 2008. The figures is encouraging for anyone who are involving and participating in the field of robotics.
Despite the encouraging growth, like any technological advancement and research, there are human and morale issues to address before the robots can become our life style partners. For examples, the concept of Cyborg and the employment issues in terms of the replacement of human workforce with robots totally.
